South Sound Adobe Users Group wants to announce that instead of a greeting card competition, we are going to hold a photo contest. All photos should be printed NO LARGER than 5 x 7.  (less toner, and less memory to print) Winner will receive a prize.

Holiday Photo Contest Rules:
Submitted: prior to 6:30 on December 13, 2010 (just before the meeting) Bring your printed out image(s)... no names on photos, please.
Theme: "capture the season"
Criteria: most of the image needs to be photo based. However, the image may be altered using software, so long as the majority of it is still photo-based.
Format: Printed out not larger than 5 x 7
We may also decide to put images on the projector, so if you have the image as a digital file, please send it to KaCe at kathce@gmail.com with ssaug contest in the subject head no later than Dec 13 at 3pm. (or bring it on a USB drive)

December 13th is our semi-annual Holiday Potluck and drawing. Have you been to three of the last six meetings? (Including Dec.) If yes, you are vested and are eligible to win the grand prize of up to $2100 in Adobe software. The software can only be a downloaded version of what you choose, it cannot be an upgrade and some software is not included as an option, but you can discuss it, if you win. Wow. It’s a generous prize and someone is going to win, it might be YOU!

This meeting is one of two where we have a pot luck dinner. Bring food to serve about 6 people. Appropriate food would be salad, dessert, or casserole. Beverages will be provided. I will see if Mac will bring some of his tasty brews, we’ll have a warm spiced drink and sodas. The UG will provide the plates, cups, etc as well. So you just need to drop by a deli, if you don’t cook and bring something to share. If you do cook, we’ll be the lucky tasters.

We are working on programs for the next half of the year. We can always use your suggestions and input. So please, do help us.

- KaCe and Bob, managers of ssaug

November 8, 2010

Our November meeting began with a report from KaCe on what MAX was like. The Adobe conference was held at Staples Center in L.A. KaCe attended the meeting for user group managers. There were several hundred attending the one day event and then stayed to attend MAX. She told how exciting it was to be with all the movers and shakers. After her description we revisit the topic of printing. Bill Rumpff and Don Kincaid added a lot of depth to the topic.  Bill from his perspective as a printer repairman, and Don from his years as a printer. We are fortunate to have both in our group. Sean shared a few tips in Photoshop and the end of the night we demoed more content aware and then digressed, or rather progressed, to how to change a color photo to black and white. This topic has more subtlety than you might expect. If you choose to convert to black and white you loose the color information. It is a better solution to use channels. There you can adjust the various color values and keep contrast up that might become “muddy” with simply clicking to convert automatically. The best thing is, none of what you do is permanent! It can all be reversed.

My memory isn’t the best, so some of what we mentioned may not be in this report. Next month I’ll appoint someone to write it up. They’ll get extra points for the drawing, so if you want an extra ticket, volunteer to do this easy task.

Please find two images in the General Discussion area of the Forum that we are asking you to print on your printer to compare with what others bring in. Please print on more than one type of paper and be sure to note: which image (jpeg or pdf) and note the paper name/type and  your printer settings... We will be discussing calibration of monitors and printers more at the October meeting.

To carry our discussion on prints further, we will be having tips on importing images into InDesign. A good meeting to attend to learn more about matching colors and color fidelity.

Kathy Porter has done yeoman's service on building us a website with a forum and lots of functionality. Let's use this instead of the "official" Adobe site until we check out the new upgrades on the "official" site. We will be sharing our new site at the September meeting, and hope everyone will like the usability of the site; the functionality of the various areas; and our new look.

This month our meeting will be to discuss Fireworks. The application that is less well known in the suite of applications. Why use it? We will also touch on the use of Acrobat and its new adaptations with Flash. Sean will give us Photoshop tips and tricks, so don't miss these yummy tidbits."

August 9, 2010

We had demonstrations of features of InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop.

July 12, 2010

We looked at tips/tricks with Sean in Photoshop; delved into the Adobe groups site and how to post there as well as shared among members of their latest work and questions.

We posted the photographs taken at the last meeting for the contest. (These were the photos from our Photograph Scavenger Hunt.)
